Document access services

The Library provides the following services:

  • Consultation in the reading room of the general collection.
  • Personal Library loans off reading room
  • Advanced Booking
  • Inter-library loans (Restricted)
  • Copying of documents

Consultation in the reading room

Permits use of the Reading Room for the consultation of collections and resources not subject to restrictions for reasons of their nature or for conservation purposes.

This service can be used by internal external users whith CSIC library card and by external users without library card who has been authorized (please,see the requirements in the Services section.

The Reading room has 14 reading posts and one computer for public use for the consultation of automatized catalogues and other Internet based digital resources. Users have internet access points at their disposal to which laptops may be connected via Wi-Fi. Also, ia reference collection, is offered made up of guidebooks, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, manuscript catalogues and a display case containing the latest journals.

Access to collections is not freely available and is subject to permission from library staff.

The Regulations section provides usage guidelines that guide the correct use of facilities and the service. The special collections (manuscripts, old collections, archive documents and valuable items) can not be cosulted and except in very exceptional cases and have their own consultation rules.

Personal Library Loans

Allows borrowing – up to 3 volumes in the case of external users – for consultation outside the library during the stipulated period of time. It is essential to have an updated library card (see Services section)

All persons borrowing documents undertake the responsibility for their proper custody, conservation and return and agree not to cede custody to third parties.

Regardless of the loan policy indicated in the catalog, next items are excluded from the personal loan:

  • Items frequently used by the researchers of the EEA
  • Reference works: encyclopaedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, catalogues and indexes
  • Conference proceedings
  • Restricted legacies
  • Periodic publications
  • Other works that are difficult to replace (no longer available, rare manuscripts that are of special value)
  • Monographs earlier than 1940
  • Non-book materials (photographs, graphics, CDs, DVDs, slides)
  • Thesis, dissertations, and unpublished end of course projects
  • Reports and unpublished research work
  • Atlas and large works
  • Documents from the historical archive

Users with a valid library card can reserve a part of the the library collections from the Opac-Primo for later consultation or loan. It is essential to have an updated library card (see Services section)

The applicant will receive a notification when the copy is ready for being collected in the library.

Inter-library loan and document access

Upon express demand, this service offers internal EEA researchers the possibility of locating and obtaining original documents on temporary loan or copies of publications that are not encountered in the library or in the CSIC digital collection.

Equally, the library lends its collections or sends copies in paper or digital format to other CSIC libraries or external libraries (on payment of the corresponding Rebiun tariff)

Before requesting this service, it is recommended that users check that the complete text of the works  requested are not already available for consultation or downloading from the Digital CSIC repository

Next items are excluded from the inter-library loan:

  • Reference works: encyclopaedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, catalogues and indexes.
  • Periodic publications
  • Other works that are difficult to replace (no longer available, rare manuscripts that are of special value)
  • Monographs earlier than 1940
  • Thesis, dissertations, and unpublished end of course projects
  • Reports and unpublished research work
  • Atlas and large works
  • Documents from the historical archive
  • Copies of frequent use by internal researchers

Copying of documents

Mornings: 8.30 to 14:30

Authorised copying of documents in the custody of the library is permitted for public or private use, providing current legislation regarding author rights, intellectual property, and Bibliographic Heritage are observed. Users must also follow international recommendations regarding the conservation of paper and other materials, especially with regard to old collections and manuscripts.

Before using this service, it is recommended that users check that the complete text of any of the works requested are not already available for consultation or download from Internet.

Items that cannot be copied in any format:

  • Books obtained from inter-library loans (except in the case of express authorization from the lending library)
  • Rare and valuable editions
  • Items that due to their condition may deteriorate on handling Doctoral thesis
  • Unpublished research work deposited at the library
  • Digital documents whose license does not permit copying
